Presentations of Concern Personality Disorder with Concurrent Substance Use
(November 2023)
At this event we heard from Dr Timothy Agnew (Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, NHS Highland Personality Disorder Service) who discussed the shift from ICD-10 TO ICD-11 in describing personality disorders, highlighting changes and the overlap between complex PTSD and personality disorders. Dr Timothy Agnew also addressed the stigma associated, and stressed the need for personalised approaches, collaboration, and focused interventions.
We also heard from Gordon Hay (Senior Improvement Advisor, Healthcare Improvement Scotland) who discussed the work by HIS to explore the current provisions and access to services for those with a diagnosis of personality disorder. Five key areas of concern were identified, emphasising trauma-informed responses, non-stigmatised care, a whole-person approach, and peer support. Recommendations for Phase 2 include third-sector involvement, a data measurement framework, and collaboration with pathfinder sites to develop pathways.
