Communicating with hard of hearing patients | from NHS North Bristol

Wearing PPE makes it difficult for staff to communicate with patients who are hard of hearing.

In Bristol, staff helped patients identify them more easily by attaching photos or ID as stickers or laminated labels to scrubs. They've been trialling different formats which say 'hello my name is [INSERT NAME AND ROLE] with a photo'.

This has helped both staff and patients communicate especially when explaining the basics of staff roles to patients.

From this experience, staff have captured some early learning:

  • ID works well when on your sleeve
  • It’s very useful when introducing yourself to patients, and
  • Colleagues know who you are underneath all the PPE
