Self-care advice in an infographic | from NHS National Education for Scotland (NES)

It is so important for staff to prioritise their wellbeing when working in a crisis and busy looking after patients.

NHS NES created an evidence-based infographic with tips to ensure staff protect their psychological wellbeing. These are available to be printed off and put up in wards in or relax and recuperation (R&R) rooms.

The infographic has three sections:

Before work:

  • Prepare with colleagues and supervisors as much as possible
  • Talk things through beforehand
  • Think back to what has helped you
  • Try to plan your breaks

At work:

  • Remind yourself you can’t take all the stress and distress on your shoulders
  • Be compassionate (to yourself)
  • Focus on what is important about your work. Connect with colleagues
  • It’s normal (to have a range of emotions)
  • Let someone know if you are not OK or finding things difficult
  • Take your breaks

After work:

  • When your shift is over, take time to check in with your colleagues
  • Switch your attention (to where you are going)
  • Rest and recharge
  • Use a ritual (routine) and separate work from rest
  • Distract yourself
  • Do something you enjoy
  • Eat well
  • Have a sleep routine and exercise if you can
  • Don’t drink too much alcohol
  • Reconnect with friends and family
