We work with primary care teams to test changes to prescribing processes and delivery of pharmacotherapy services

The GMS Contract (2018) and the supporting Memorandum of Understanding 2 outlined a commitment to the development of HSCP led pharmacotherapy services to support GP workload. Acute prescribing makes up a significant part of day-to-day workload in primary care services and this programme provides solutions to support rapid sustainable improvement.

The programme aims to deliver improvements that:

  • enable staff involved in prescribing to work together effectively, and
  • enable pharmacotherapy and practice staff to fully utilise their skills sets.

Support for primary care teams

The current phase of the programme has focused on acute prescribing. We supported primary care teams by:

  • developing a network to help us understand what good acute prescribing looks like
  • working with the acute prescribing advisory group to develop useful tools and resources to support improvements in the safe and effective management of acute prescribing, and
  • holding a series of workshops to support the development of a toolkit.

The Acute Prescribing Toolkit launched in September 2022. Watch the recording of the launch webinar to learn more about the toolkit and the experiences of primary care teams that participated in the Acute Prescribing Learning Network.

Listen to Dr Rebecca Green's vlog where she describes how the Acute Prescribing Toolkit helped her practice to improve their acute prescribing processes.
