In December 2017, the Royal College of Physicians published an updated report which made changes to the National Early Warning Score (NEWS).

To support the reliable delivery of NEWS in NHS Scotland, the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) has worked with NHS Education Scotland (NES) to develop a learning module called: National Early Warning Score (NEWS) in NHS Scotland’ which is now available on TURAS.

NEWS is an evidence based tool that supports recognition, escalation and communication of acute illness, which includes Sepsis. The wide uptake of NEWS across NHS Scotland has contributed to significant improvements in outcomes experienced by people using health care services, including reductions in cardiac arrest rates and mortality from sepsis.

Dr Calum McGregor, clinical lead for the ihub’s SPSP Acute Adult portfolio said:

“We are delighted to publish this eLearning module for NEWS which we have developed in collaboration with NES. The e-learning module will support ongoing education to facilitate the recognition and escalation of deteriorating patients. I’d recommend anyone working in healthcare to complete this module.”
