Safety Principles in Mental Health relaunched
Scottish Patient Safety Programme – Mental Health (SPSP-MH) are proud to re-launch revised and refreshed Safety Principles for Mental Health.
The principles can now be used to improve care in any in-patient mental health setting from CAMHS to Older Adult Mental Health, broadening their use beyond adult in-patient units.
To avoid creating new Safety Principles for each area, the important aspects of the original 21 have been condensed into more manageable formats.
The four new Safety Principles are:
Communication
Leadership & Culture
Least Restrictive Practice
Physical Health
SPSP MH has worked in partnership with other organisations including Carers Trust Scotland, Support in Mind Scotland, Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland and Bipolar Scotland and as well as the principles there are a range of tools, approaches and interventions that can be accessed to support the delivery of safety focused improvement. These include the Triangle of Care, Broset Violence Checklist, Rights in Mind Pathway and Advance Statements. Combining the principles and these tools can support the delivery of high quality, person centred improvement.
