A ‘happy code’ to share the good news proves motivation for all | from Montefiore Health System, New York City

Healthcare staff want to help the young patients in their care to feel as comfortable as possible, and are finding creative ways to make the experience less scary or overwhelming.

So, staff in New York decided to create a ‘happy code’.  By playing a popular song across the hospital PA system, everyone who hears it will know it means a COVID19 patient has come off a ventilator or is being discharged.

Celebrating the positive outcomes of care in this way has proven to raise staff and patient morale. Signalling that patients are improving provides a hopeful and uplifting daily reminder of the hard work being done.

Encouraging staff to take a moment to sing along has helped them to laugh and enjoy these more light-hearted moments at work.
