This event focused on Caring for Co-occurring Conditions and explored these topics:
- Everybody’s business? Treating co-occurring substance use and mental health problems.
- Alcohol detoxification.
Professor Owen Bowden Jones (Consultant Addiction Psychiatrist, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust; Honorary Professor, University College London; President, Society for the Study of Addiction) discussed the conceptual framework for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. The presentation acknowledged the challenges whilst highlighting drugs and co-morbidities services should know about. A forthcoming publication on Co-existing Substance Use and Mental health problems (CoSUM) from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, scheduled for Spring 2025, was also described.
Alan Steele (Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Substance Use Service, NHS Forth Valley) presented on the topic Alcohol detoxification. He provided an overview of alcohol detox, both at home and in the community, and explained why services use the medication they do and how it works.
