The Personality Disorder Improvement Programme (PDIP) supports NHS boards and health and social care partnerships (HSCP) delivering mental health services to identify improvement opportunities in relation to the service provision for people with a diagnosis of a personality disorder in Scotland.

Phase 1

Phase 1 of PDIP, from January 2022 to March 2023, worked to understand the current service provision for people with a diagnosis of a personality disorder by

  • delivering a learning system
  • facilitating board visits to better understand their local systems
  • providing network opportunities, and
  • identifying improvement opportunities for Phase 2.

The learning system/network was developed to help address gaps in services by providing:

  • networking opportunities
  • opportunities to identify examples of good practice, and
  • case studies and resources.

Phase 2

The second phase of the PDIP was launched in April 2024 aiming to build on the findings from Phase 1. The first phase of the work recognised that those who struggle with the symptoms of personality disorder required more support and better care. It was therefore recommended that improvement work was essential.

The end of phase report recommended:

  • the development of a data measurement framework for services
  • the need for a toolkit to support service improvements, and
  • work with a two NHS boards with diverse socio-geographic backgrounds – such as urban, rural and mixed areas – to design and implement practical improvements to pathways.
